Ferry Holdings Limited publishes its 2026/27 Statement of Performance Expectations
Ferry Holdings has published our Statement of Performance Expectations (SPE) for 2026/27, setting out what we will deliver over the next year as it progresses the Cook Strait Ferry Replacement Programme.
The Cook Strait connection is a vital link for New Zealand, connecting people, freight and businesses between the North and South Islands. The Government has committed to delivering safe, reliable, resilient and economically efficient ferry services, with two new ferries expected to enter service in 2029.
The SPE provides transparency about the work we are undertaking to achieve that goal. It allows the public, stakeholders and Parliament to see what we are responsible for delivering and how our progress will be assessed over the coming year.
This coming year we are focused on moving from planning and contracting into delivery. Key priorities include:
- Finalising the detailed design of the new ferries and preparing for construction to begin in 2027.
- Continuing marine simulations and technical assurance work to support the new vessels entering service safely.
- Progressing major infrastructure works in Wellington and Picton to ensure both ports are ready when the new ferries arrive.
- Coordinating delivery across programme partners including KiwiRail, CentrePort and Port Marlborough.
Work is already underway, with early construction activities progressing and major infrastructure works scheduled to continue through 2026 and beyond.
