Ferry Holdings gifts a marine chart produced in Waitomo to Chinese Shipyard

Ferry Holdings has officially signed a contract with Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) for the construction of two new Cook Strait ferries.

Waitomo company, “a great backyard”, played a key role by providing a Cook Strait marine chart, which was the official gift from Ferry Holdings to GSI.

“It was a huge honour to provide our marine chart as an official gift and see my work on the world stage,” said Corin Walker Bain. “When first approached, I knew it was not the usual sort of request you get, and this was a special project.”

“This image shows the route our new ferries will travel and marks the beginning of a very important journey of delivery for both Ferry Holdings and Guangzhou Shipyard International,” said Chris Mackenzie, Chair of Ferry Holdings.

Ceremonial gifts are central to building strong, enduring commercial relationships in China. More than a tradition, they symbolise respect, trust, and goodwill, creating lasting connections in both personal and professional settings.

“The signing ceremony was attended by the Right Honourable Winston Peters, – Minister for Rail Chris MacKenzie – Chair of Ferry Holdings, Mr Zhou Xuhui, William – President of Guangzhou Shipyard International, and other senior leaders from CSSC and GSI.
